What's Blooming Now at Floyd Bennett: Opuntia humifusa, Eastern Prickly Pear

Opuntia humifusa (Eastern Prickly Pear) in bloom, Floyd Bennett Field, Gateway National Recreation Area

Exploitably vulnerable in New York state, according to this source, which sounds a lot like the current status of the old airfield where I found it while exploring yesterday evening.

My opuntia has finished blooming. I really just wanted to write opuntia. I only knew it as prickly pear.

Always learning.

Its even more fun to say (or rather to mispronouce). I like to say oh-poon-tiya with a sort of flourished brow and a wave of my hand. This is completely wrong but it reminds me of something out of that movie The Princess Bride and so I always say it like that. I hope you are enjoying the same perfect weather that we are here down in Va.
