It's no small thing to see woodpeckers while you work and as this internship comes to an end, it is an opportunity that will be missed. I love that there's always the possibility to learn about something wild on any given day, maybe a bird that you've really only heard before or caught just a glimpse of, and usually someone around who might know what it is. Carol missed seeing this Woodpecker today and she's usually good for a bird ID, so I had to go to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website to name this bird. Looks like a female Downy Woodpecker, Picoides pubescens. I hope I don't need to start a bird lifelist now because I don't even have my book on mushroom identification yet.
