They Are Precious

The last of some Brooklyn grown zinnias
They are precious because they are the last ones of the season. They are precious because they can not last forever. But they are mostly precious to me because we grew them. I feel the same ridiculous way about the carrots in the fridge and the dried chamomile in the cupboard. I don't think we can help but fall in love with the things we tend.

Like the pumpkin outside the glass.

By the way, I've had some thoughts on just this:

Interesting. Thanks for the link. Have been thumbing through that book in the last month and my favorite chapter is The Human Gardener. Makes me very much want to read Capek's The Gardener's Year. Loved the quotes from his book in that chapter. If I had to nail it down though in a way that even a child could get, I'd say it's just like The Little Prince and his rose though. Good luck at the opening today. I'm not sure that we can make it but want to wish you well.
