Crepe Myrtle walk

The Crape Myrtles (Lagerstroemia indica) have been the stars of summer for the last few weeks and were all over Long Island in bloom this weekend. Dan took the time to explain to all the interns last week about how he pruned the ones in this photo back hard last year because they had overgrown the space and how happy he was to see them blooming so well. This has to be one of my favorite little corners of Brooklyn Botanic. It is blooming spectacularly right now, but I loved it while the trees were bare too. The summer lilacs, as Dan calls them. They are stunning from the Overlook.
