Saving Seeds

Not just any old pea seeds. These were seeds from an endangered native species. And I got to cut the pods off and put them in envelopes for storing to sow later. How cool is that?

Aeschynomene virginica (Virginia joint-vetch)

The seed was wild collected in New Jersey and propogated at Brooklyn Botanic. According to the Center for Plant Conservation only 25 known populations of this plant exist mostly in the Mid-Atlantic region where it is native. It is usually found in freshwater tidal marshes. The tiny yellow pea shaped flowers with red veins open in the afternoon and are lovely to see up close and personal. You can get a sense of how tiny they are when pictured up close with their caretaker, Uli. This was a cool assignment.
